DURHAM 3, ALGONQUIN 1

DURHAM 3, ALGONQUIN 1

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's volleyball team defeated Algonquin 3-1 Friday night at the CRWC. Set scores were 25-22, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-23.

The Lords were led by their outside hitter Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) who converted over half of her strike attempts to record 18 kills, two serving aces and four blocks. A wonderful chemistry in the game seemed to build between Broad and the Lords setter Meghan Renwick (Brooklin, Ont.) as the two continually worked together to help the Lords pull away or rediscover momentum throughout the match. Renwick tallied 23 assists in total through the four set match.

Durham started slow as Algonquin jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. However, the Lords fought back to recapture momentum and force an Algonquin timeout when they reached within two points of the Thunder lead. The timeout did not help Algonquin as the Lords momentum continued to roll as LeeAnne Jeffs (Stirling, Ont.) held a strong service game and helped capture the first set. Jeffs would lead the Lords in service aces tallying four total.

The second set saw another slow start for the Lords as Algonquin again jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead. Durham struggled to maintain serve and saw the bulk of their service errors occur in this set. Durham rallied behind the service of Natalie Manicotto (Winnipeg) but would fall short dropping the set.

The third and fourth sets were tightly contested between the two teams as both looked to capture the advantage. The third set never saw a team lead by more than two points until the Lords captured momentum after being tied 12-12 and pulled away for the victory. Both Rayan Bourne (Whitby, Ont.) and Allison Doris (Ajax, Ont.) played big roles in the final two sets. Bourne led the Lords in digs with 14, while Doris showcased energy in all facets throughout the four set match.

This is the Lords' first win after dropping their opening two matches in five sets.

Durham will next welcome La Cite on Saturday, Nov. 9 for their next match-up at the CRWC. First serve is at 6 p.m.

Durham College is proud to host the OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship (Feb. 20-22, 2014) and the OCAA Volleyball/Basketball All-Star Games (March 22, 2014) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
