GEORGIAN 3, DURHAM 1

BARRIE, Ont. - It was a night of mixed results as the Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's volleyball teams hosted the visiting Durham Lords in Barrie on Friday night.

A loud group of Grizzlies fans cheered on at the Georgian Athletic Centre and the women's team didn't disappoint.

The Grizzlies came out of the gate strong taking the first set by an impressive 25-9 score to take an early 1-0 lead.

Durham regrouped and tied the game by taking the second set 25-19 and in doing so broke an impressive streak for the Grizzlies who had not lost a set at home all season.

Georgian made sure not to let it happen again as they took the next two sets 25-19 and 25-15 to capture the 3-1 victory.

The Grizzlies had a strong contest from Erin McClean (Barrie) who led the team with seven kills and an impressive five serving aces while second year setter Katharyn Avery (Barrie) posted 12 assists.

Georgian's men's team didn't have the same luck as the women's team Friday.

The Lords controlled play from start to finish, sweeping the Grizzlies 3-0 in sets of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-19.

The Grizzlies couldn't find a way to keep the ball away from Durham's Riley McAllister (Whitby). The fifth-year veteran setter for the Lords set up his teammates throughout the game posting an incredible 29 assists.

Georgian's Jason Grimm (Orangeville) led the Grizzlies in scoring with 11 points while Michael Vandinther (Barrie) had a solid effort with 11 digs.

Georgian's volleyball teams have one game remaining on their first half schedule Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Georgian Athletic Centre when they host the Trent Excalibur.  The women's game will be a battle for first place between the Grizzlies (7-1) and the only team they are chasing in the East Division standings in the first-place Excalibur (7-0).

BARRIE, Ont. - The Durham College women's volleyball team could not find a way to stop the red-hot Georgian Grizzlies Friday night as they were beat by a score of 3-1.

Georgian has won six straight games as they improve to 7-1 in conference action and 4-0 on home court.

After getting blasted in the first set 25-9, Durham was able to rebound with a 25-19 victory in set two. Unfortunately for the Lords, that was their lone set victory of the night as Georgian took the next two by scores of 25-19 and 25-15.

The 25-19 loss was only the second set Georgian has dropped in their current six match winning streak.

Durham outside hitter Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) recorded 10 kills and one aces for a team-high 11 points. In six of Durham's seven matches, Broad has scored in double-digits. She entered the match second in OCAA east region scoring averaging 4.4 points per set.

Lords sophomore Madison Pilon (Rondeau, Ont.) registered five kills and two aces in the loss and Meghan Renwick (Brooklin, Ont.) had 23 assists and seven digs.

Durham had a tough time handling Georgian's serves as they combined for 24 aces. Erin McClean and Hannah Campbell had eight and seven aces respectively.

Durham slips to sixth place in the standings holding a 3-5 record. The Lords will look to rebound in Belleville next Wednesday night when they take on the Loyalist Lancers (1-6). Game-time at the Lancerdome at 6 p.m.
