GEORGIAN 3, ALGONQUIN 0

BARRIE, Ont. - Fresh off winning the Adidas Cup last weekend in Oshawa, the Georgian Grizzlies women's volleyball continued their strong play in their first OCAA regular season match of the new calendar year.

Hosting the Algonquin Thunder Friday night at the Georgian Athletic Centre, the Grizzlies put together an impressive 3-0 sweep over the visitors from Ottawa.

While the Thunder battled the Grizzlies hard in each set, Georgian were able to pull out the win with set wins of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-23.

Allison Marshall (Orillia) and Erin McClean (Barrie) led the Grizzlies in scoring with 12 points each.

The Grizzlies now have an 8-2 record on the season and are just half a game back of the Trent Excalibur and Seneca Sting who sit on top of the East Division standings with 8-1 records.

Georgian's men's team were staring down a tough opponent in the visiting Thunder who were playing for a share of first place in the East Division standings in their match.

The Grizzlies put up a good fight early against Algonquin dropping a tight first set 25-23 before coming back with a 25-22 set win to even the score.

Unfortunately for Georgian, the team ran out of steam dropping the final two sets 25-14 and 25-18 to lose the match 3-1.

Despite the loss, the Grizzlies had a good effort out of returning veteran Jahsan Toney (Mississauga) who had 10 points in his first game of the season while first-year setter Justin Burke (Wingham) had five points and added 32 assists.

The Thunder were led by fifth-year veteran Philippe Yeldon (Ottawa) who had a game-high 16 points.

The men's and women's teams will travel to face the Loyalist Lancers this Sunday afternoon in Belleville.
