MOHAWK 3, NIAGARA 0

HAMILTON, Ont. - They had to battle hard, but the Mohawk men's volleyball team handed the Niagara Knights their first defeat of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season Thursday (Jan. 16) at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre. The Mountaineers served notice they were ready for the match despite a first game defeat and they came back for a five set win, 26-28, 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 15-13.

Mohawk made it three wins in a row and upped their record to 8-4, while Niagara fell to 11-1.

Bryce Marcussen led Mohawk with 12 kills and four stuff blocks. Trevor McLaughlin had 10 kills and one block, Eric Danecke had eight kills and three blocks and Bradley Regier added seven kills, two service aces and two blocks. Mark Kaveckas had 41 assists.

For Niagara, Nathan Snippe had 15 kills and three blocks, Daniel Groenveld had nine kills and three aces and Jeff Scott contributed nine kills and one ace. Bradley Wall was credited with 44 assists.

The Mohawk women's volleyball side fashioned a three-game sweep of Niagara. The scores were 25-15, 25-18, 25-23. The result left both teams with 5-7 marks.

Kirsten Bialachowski paced the Mountaineers with 12 kills. Kaylee Duncan had seven kills and one stuff block. Chi Chi Chuks-Mady had five kills, two stuff blocks and 17 digs and Kristin VanHartingsveldt came up with six kills and one block. Corinne McGrath had 26 assists.

For Niagara, Madison Morgan had six kills and one block, while Sami Bailey contributed six kills, one block and 12 digs. Kaylee Barber had 21 assists.
