PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's volleyball teams travelled to Peterborough this past weekend for games against the Fleming Knights and Trent Excalibur and came away with a near perfect record.
After suffering two tough defeats to open the second half, the men were in desperate need of some wins to get back over the .500 mark on the season.
After dropping the first set to Fleming to open the road trip the Grizzlies responded winning three straight sets getting stronger in each along the way leading to a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-14).
Lyndon Sonego (Barrie) led the team in scoring with 14 points.
The Grizzlies carried that momentum right into their next match battling hard against Trent leading to an impressive 3-0 win (27-25, 25-18, 25-19).
Once again Sonego put together a strong performance scoring a team-high 14 points while teammate Jason Grimm (Orangeville) had 11 points.
Georgian sits in fifth place in the east division standings with a 7-6 record on the season.
The women's team suffered some unfortunate firsts in the 2014 calendar year. Heading into action the Grizzlies were yet to surrender a single set to the opposition, but that changed on Saturday against Fleming.
The underdog Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the Grizzlies who had to rally back to win three straight sets to take the match 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-7, 25-8, 15-9). Fourth year middle Hannah Campbell (Midland) led the comeback for Georgian scoring a team-high 13 points.
The Grizzlies maintained their undefeated streak since the start of January despite ending their set win streak at 20, but that would change on Sunday.
Facing the team tied for first in the OCAA East Division, the Trent Excalibur on Sunday, the Grizzlies knew they were in for a battle.
Both teams traded the first four sets with some great play between two of the OCAA's elite. The fifth set was another battle but despite their best efforts the Grizzlies fell by a 3-2 score (22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 14-25, 15-10).
Last year's Georgian female athlete of the year Natalie Buck (Keswick) had a tremendous game scoring a team high 18 points.
The Grizzlies now hold a 10-3 record on the season and sit in third place in the East Division standings.
Georgian will play host to the Seneca Sting on Friday, Jan. 24 with the women's game scheduled for 6 p.m. and the men's at 8 p.m. at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie, Ont.
