REDEEMER 3, MOHAWK 2

ANCASTER, Ont. - In what was just an incredible night of volleyball at Redeemer, the Mohawk Mountaineers lost a pair of five set decisions to their Mountain rivals, the Royals, Thursday (Feb. 6). Both matches, played before a large and as usual boisterous Redeemer crowd, were  tremendous advertisements for OCAA varsity athletics.

Despite their 26-24, 14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 14-16 defeat, the Mohawk women are the only team this season to take Redeemer to five sets. But on this night the Royals won their fifth straight match and improved their record to 12-4, a new mark for Redeemer women's volleyball.

Kirsten Bialachowski led the 7-10 Mountaineers with 19 kills and 12 digs. Chi Chi Chuks Mady had 13 kills, two service aces, two stuff blocks and 12 digs.

For the Royals, OCAA Women's Athlete of the Week Curtiss Straatsma had 22 kills, two aces and two blocks. Jocelyn Klompmaker added 10 kills,  six aces and one block.

The Mountaineer men then suffered a fate similar to their female counterparts, losing 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, 17-25, 10-15 to Redeemer.

OCAA Men's Athlete of the Week, Trevor McLaughlin, led Mohawk with 12 kills and eight digs. Bryce Marcussen was next with nine kills and two blocks for the Mountaineers, who just this week broke into the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings at No. 14, but saw their seven match win streak stopped and their record slip to 12-5.

Redeemer improved to 10-6. Two of their wins have been over Mohawk.
