FANSHAWE 3, GEORGIAN 1

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Fanshawe College women's volleyball team defeated Georgian College 3-1 in the opening round of the OCAA Championship being held at Durham College's Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre this weekend. Set scores were 25-27, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-19.
 
The Falcons were led by West region first-team all-star Kaitlyn Kelly (Kitchener, Ont.) who earned game MVP for her outstanding effort in the four set match. Kelly displayed her power putting together a string of strong service games alongside her team leading 12 kills. Many of her powerful kills were assisted by freshman Darian Gropp (Kitchener, Ont.) who collected 37 assists and a team leading five digs.
 
Despite coming up short in the pivotal opening game of the championship, Georgian received strong performances from Natalie Buck (Keswick, Ont.) who led the Grizzlies with 11 kills and three blocked shots and game MVP Erin McClean (Barrie, Ont.) who registered six kills, two service aces and two blocked shots.
 
With the victory, Fanshawe moves on to the semi-final round and will matchup with the winner of Conestoga versus Seneca while Georgian will move on to the bronze medal quarter-final round against the loser of the same match.
 
Durham College is proud to host the OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship (Feb. 20-22) and the OCAA Volleyball/Basketball All-Star Games (Mar. 22) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
