LONDON, Ont. - On Saturday afternoon, the Fanshawe Falcons women's volleyball team (14-2) defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-9) in straight sets in the Falcons final league home game of the year (25-18, 25-19, 25-17). The Falcons currently sit in second place in the OCAA West Division and are ranked No. 13 in Canada.

The Falcons scored four straight to start the first set, forcing the Mountaineers into an early timeout. Fanshawe jumped out to a 12-3 lead but the Mountaineers cut the lead to five at 15-10.  Kaitlyn Kelly took over the offence with six kills and the Falcons won the first set 25-18.

After being down 4-2, Mohawk scored six straight points with Kaylee Duncan serving and took an 8-4 lead early in the second set. After being down by as many as six, Fanshawe battled back and retook the lead 14-13. Fanshawe scored nine straight points and took a commanding lead in the set. Kelly put up 10 points in the second set alone and the Falcons won 25-19.

This time Mohawk jumped out to the early lead 5-2, but the Falcons started to take over and retook the lead 8-7. The game was close until the Falcons went on yet another 6-0 run and ran away with the set 25-17. Kelly finished the match with a game-high 22 points, putting her into third place in the OCAA in points per game.

The Falcons are on the road next Saturday, Feb. 8 to face the Redeemer Royals (11-4).  Redeemer currently sits in third place right behind in the OCAA West Division standings.

LONDON, Ont. - A volleyball twin bill in London, Ont., on Saturday ended in a split for Mohawk and Fanshawe.

The Mountaineer men won a four setter, 25-23, 25-20,13-25, 26-24, over the Falcons. Trevor McLaughlin had a strong match for the winners with 20 kills, two service aces and one stuff block. Bryce Marcussen had 14 kills, one ace and four blocks. Eric Danecke came up with 10 kills and two blocks and Bart Jedrzejewski had 14 digs.

With the victory, the Mountaineers won their seventh straight and their record improved to 12-4, the same as Fanshawe. The two teams are tied with Niagara, two points back of West Division-leading Humber. The Knights and Hawks each have a game in hand on the Mountaineers and Falcons. Niagara visits St. Clair and Humber goes to Conestoga Sunday.

The news out of London was not as good for the Mohawk women, who were swept by Fanshawe, 18-25, 19-25, 17-25. Kristin VanHartingsveldt led the Mountaineers with six kills, one block and five digs. Kaitlin Kelly paced the Falcons with 21 kills, one ace, one block and 15 digs.

After two straight defeats, Mohawk, now 7-9, need to earn two points against either Redeemer or Humber, to be assured of making it to post-season play.

Fanshawe upped its record to 14-2 and trail first-place Humber by two points in the West Division.
