FANSHAWE 3, NIAGARA 1

LONDON, Ont. - On Saturday afternoon, the Fanshawe Falcons women's volleyball team (12-1) defeated the Niagara Knights (5-9) in four sets (25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12) and extended their Fanshawe College record winning streak to 12 games. The Falcons currently sit in second place in the OCAA West Division and are ranked No. 13 in Canada.

The Falcons started the game on a 4-0 run, forcing the Knights into an early timeout. Niagara's tough serving kept them in the game and gave them the lead at 14-13 but the Falcons responded with tough serving of their own. Stephanie Bignell brought the Falcons back and retook the lead with six straight serves including three straight aces. The Falcons went on to win the first set 25-18.

Niagara jumped out of the gate in the second and had a 7-2 lead but the Falcons battle back behind their great defence and retook the lead at 17-16. With Kaitlyn Kelly back to serve, Fanshawe put up 10 straight points and came back to win the second set 25-16.

In the third set, Kelly continued where she left off in second, running off another six serves, including two more aces, to give the Falcons a 9-3 lead. Niagara made a huge run behind some great team blocking and tied the game at 22. Back-to-back blocks by Niagara's Alexandria Botelho and a Fanshawe error gave the Knights the 25-22 third set win.

Fanshawe took control early in the fourth set and with the score 11-4, Niagara used its second timeout of the set. The Falcons continued to push and took the fourth set by a final score of 25-12.

The Falcons will look to keep their win streak alive next Tuesday, Jan. 28, when they play at home versus the Conestoga Condors (8-4). The game takes place at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre and begins at 6 p.m.
