FANSHAWE 3, ST. CLAIR 1

LONDON, Ont. - On Thursday night, the Fanshawe Falcons women's volleyball team (11-1) extended their Fanshawe College record 11-game win streak by defeating the St. Clair Saints (6-7) in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17).

The Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead but the Saints came right back with six of their own. Down by two, Fanshawe's Darian Gropp served up seven straight to give the Falcons some breathing room. The Saints kept slowly chipping away and were within one (19-18) before Fanshawe took control and won the first set 25-20.

St. Clair came out scrappy in the second, not letting anything hit the ground on its side of the court. The Saints took a quick 7-2 leading forcing the Falcons to take a timeout. After being down 15-5, Fanshawe tightened up its game and crept back into the set. A massive kill by Kaitlyn Kelly seemed to spark the Falcons but the Saints would take the set 25-22.

The Saints were fired up to start the third and led by as many as three before four straight points by Kelly gave the Falcons a 13-12 advantage. Fanshawe's Stephanie Bignell had a huge stuff block and couldn't be stopped in the middle. The offensive combination of Bignell and Kelly took over and the Falcons won the set 25-18.

Tough serving by Fanshawe in the fourth set had the Falcons jump out to a 9-3 lead. Fanshawe took care of business the rest of the way, winning the final set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

Fanshawe plays at home again during Falcons Fest this Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. versus the Niagara Knights (5-8).
