SENECA 3, LA CITE 0

NORTH YORK, Ont. - The Seneca Sting women's volleyball team continued their historic turnaround season with another three-set sweep over the visiting La Cité Coyotes Saturday night.

The win was lucky 13 on the season for the Sting against just two losses, both to the Georgian Grizzlies. Last season, the Sting stumbled to a 9-11 record, failing to make the OCAA crossover weekend.

The Sting won by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.

Ten of the 11 dressed for Seneca saw floor time with all but starting setter Paulynne Reyes (Edmonton) playing at least two sets. Tina O'Donnell failed to enter the match while resting a sore ankle.

The visiting Coyotes posed more of a threat for the Sting than their record would indicate early in the match as the teams battled to a 14-14 tie in the opening set. The talent and experience on the Sting would pull them through the tough set for the four-point win.

The balanced attack by the Sting continued to be a formula for success as nine members recorded at least one kill. Rebecca Sobie (Mississauga, Ont.) and Bianca Newman (Ajax, Ont.) each had a match-high eight kills.

Strong defence was also on display for the Sting, limiting the Coyotes to just 17 team kills while the Sting countered with 38. Libero Clare Weisser (Queensville, Ont.) led the team with seven digs while Danielle Simpson (Alliston, Ont.) added five.

Rarely-used setter Kiana Miller had her best match of the season, recorded 23 assists, a team-high four aces and four digs.

The Sting travel to Peterborough, Ont., for matches against Fleming on Friday at 6 p.m. and Trent on Saturday at 1 p.m. With a record of 13-2, the Sting sit in second in the OCAA East Division, trailing Trent (14-1).
