BARRIE, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's volleyball teams hosted the Seneca Sting on Wednesday night in both colleges first matches of the second half of the OCAA season.
The eagerly anticipated match on the women's side between the first place Grizzlies and the tied for second Sting was one Georgian had marked on the calendar.
The Grizzlies didn't disappoint coming out of the gate strong taking the first two sets 25-10 and 25-17. After a minor setback of falling 25-23 in the fourth, the Grizzlies finished off the impressive 3-1 victory with a final set score of 25-17.
As it has been all season, it was another standout performance by fifth-year middle Hannah Campbell. The native of Midland, Ont., had a team-high 17 points and at times took over control of the game on her own.
Allison Marshall (Orillia, Ont.) was strong with a 13-point performance while Mackenzie Roy (Barrie, Ont.) had eight points including team highs in serving aces (six), digs (11) and assists (41).
The Grizzlies women gave themselves some room on top of the east division standings as they are two victories ahead of the now only second place team, the Trent Excalibur.
On the men's side there was not a whole lot of difference between the two teams.
The Grizzlies took the first set 25-23. The Sting rallied back to take the next set 26-24 and then moved ahead taking the next set 25-22.
With their backs against the wall and three straight tight sets, Georgian gave all their effort to rally back taking the fourth set 25-12 to set up a fifth and final tiebreak set.
The problem was the Grizzlies used up all their energy in the fourth set.
The Sting were able to jump ahead and never look back taking the tiebreak 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Jason Grimm (Orangeville, Ont.) led the Grizzlies with 20 points while Matt Boucher (Collingwood, Ont.) had 13 in the loss.
The Grizzlies volleyball teams will be heading to Ottawa for a couple of matches versus Algonquin and La Cite on Jan. 17 and 18 before returning home for important games against Trent and Fleming on Jan. 24 and 25 at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
