FANSHAWE 3, CANADORE 1

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Fanshawe's Renee McCormick (Waterloo) led way with 19 kills as the Falcons upset higher seed Canadore 3-1 in the opening round of the OCAA provincial championship.

The Panthers found themselves trailing early and dropped the first set 26-24, despite a late rally towards the end.

Canadore took the early lead in the second set, but could not hold off a late surge by the Falcons. Some costly miscues on both the offensive and defensive ends allowed Fanshawe to steal the set 26-24.

"Coming back in the first set and not being able to pull that match through with some terrible decisions and then have the same result in the second set, that was tough. So, momentum comes and goes and we needed to keep that consistent and they did that better today," shared Canadore head coach Stefanie Leblanc.

Lindsay Vanderweide (Carlisle) led the way for the Panthers with 14 kills as the host team regained the momentum, taking the third set 25-23.

Canadore could not keep that momentum as Fanshawe took immediate control of the fourth set, winning it handily 25-18.

McCormick was named game MVP for her team and credited a team effort for winning tight battles in the first two sets.

"Our last set we really pulled through. We knew we really wanted to win. We all came together as we are like family and so it's good for us to put it away like that," said McCormick.
