CAMBRIAN HOSTS OCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PROVINCIALS

CAMBRIAN HOSTS OCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PROVINCIALS

SUDBURY, Ont. - The top eight teams are set to compete for provincial hardware at the 2019 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect. The event is being hosted by Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont., from Friday through Sunday.

A pair of undefeated teams appear to be on a collision course, as the West Division champion Fanshawe Falcons and East Division champion Durham Lords sport identical 19-0 records. Both programs are no stranger to the OCAA podium, with Durham taking silver in 2017, and Fanshawe awarded bronze in 2016.

The biggest challenge, however, could be dethroning the 11-time defending OCAA champion Humber Hawks. At 15-4, Humber may have been finally vulnerable in the regular season suffering its first regular season loss since 2011, but the post-season streak is another matter entirely.

The reigning silver medalist Niagara Knights (11-8) and bronze medalist St. Clair Saints (16-3) have also advanced to the championship as they look to make a return trip to the podium. Rounding out the competition are the host Cambrian Golden Shield (4-14), Mohawk Mountaineers (14-5) and Sheridan Bruins (9-10). There will be a familiarity between the competitors, with all teams except Durham residing in the West Division.

A total of 11 matches will be played in a span of three days. The OCAA quarter-finals will take place on Friday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. Winning teams will advance to the OCAA semi-finals on Saturday, followed by the bronze and gold medal matches on Sunday.

While each team is guaranteed at least two matches, they must win their quarter-final match to remain in OCAA medal contention. Losing teams in the quarter-finals will compete in the consolation round Saturday, with the final taking place Sunday.

The OCAA champion and host Niagara Knights advance to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Volleyball National Championship, taking place in Welland, Ont., next month. If Niagara wins the OCAA championship, the runner-up will also advance.

Here's a closer look at the quarter-final match-ups.
