OAKVILLE, Ont. - After a long three days of battling among the most competitive teams in the OCAA, the final four teams wrapped up an exciting three days of competition at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Volleyball Championship.
First up was Seneca Sting versus Mohawk Mountaineers in the bronze medal match. This was one of the most exciting matches to watch, with even back and forth plays, both teams staying alive right till the end, where Mohawk came back from a deficit in the third set to claim the victory, keeping with the championship theme of winning the matches 3-0 and earning themselves the OCAA bronze medal. Player of the Games were awarded to Yvonne Mann of Mohawk who recorded four attacks, one kill, one ace, and nine digs, and Ngameni Davina of Seneca who logged 12 kills, one ace and seven digs.
Finally, the time came what all eight teams battled for starting on Thursday. The championship match brought the Humber Hawks and the Durham Lords for one final matchup. As much as Durham started every match keeping the score within a couple points and even leading a handful of times, it was not enough to claim the final victory. The Hawks defended their championship title and will be taking the gold medal home to Humber College for the second year in a row, with Durham taking the silver medals. This game could have gone either way and that is the way a championship game should be; a nailbiter all the way. The Players of the Game were awarded to Keyome Ellis of Humber who logged five kills, three aces and four blocks and Brooke Young of Durham who documented three kills, 10 assists, six digs and two blocks.
On top of Player of the Game awards, today athletes were also awarded the OCAA Championship All-Star awards to the top six athletes. They were award to:
- #3 Anika Gatto of Mohawk
- #2 Brooke Allerston of Seneca
- #17 Katie Stewart of Durham
- #20 Mia Hildebrandt of Durham
- #15 Cassidy Andrews of Humber
- #4 Keyome Ellis of Humber
Lastly, Championship MVP was awarded to OCAA Player of the Year Erika Dodd on an overall outstanding tournament appearance.
Congratulations to all eight teams who showed up and played hard this tournament. Extra congratulations to the gold medal recipients, silver medal recipients and the bronze medalist.
