Ontario runners had a great day as St. Lawrence College, Kingston
successfully hosted the 2008 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association
(CCAA) Cross Country Running Open Championship at Old Fort Henry. A
total of 33 schools took part with 113 women runners and 134 men
runners.
OCAA Champion Dawn Martin of St. Lawrence College, Brockville
crossed the line in third to win bronze in the women’s race.
Martin is the first OCAA women to win an individual medal at
Nationals since Jutta Merilainen of Loyalist won silver in 2004.
The Schooner runner had an impressive season as she medaled in
every event she ran in this year.
The Fanshawe Falcons captured the Women’s team gold medal.
This marks the first time a team from Ontario has won the
Women’s team gold medal at the CCAA Cross Country
Championships. Fanshawe was led by Becky Pieterson who finished in
4th and Tineke Dejong who crossed in 10th. Other members of the
gold medal winning Falcons were Joanna Clark, Ashley Killens, Sarah
Vandonl, Melissa Linker, Alysha Gjos, Aleasha Soutiere, and Kaite
Dundas.
The Humber Hawks were not far behind the Falcons as the won the
Women’s team silver medal. The team was comprised of Amanda
Pryde, Cynthia Black, Stephanie Coughlin, Becky Tindall, and Ciara
Gaizutis.
On the Men’s side, David Sharratt was the first OCAA runner
to cross the line in 6th. He was followed closely by
Cambrian’s Josh Bujold (8th) and John Mason of Fanshawe
(10th).
The Fanshawe men’s team captured team bronze. The bronze
medal winning team was comprised of Mason, Mike Scipio, Sean
Cunningham, Nick Popma, Josh Ackworth and Sean Coleshill.
As a conference, the OCAA placed third in Men’s, while the
Women took home silver, capping off a successful day for the
Ontario runners.
