OCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS TAKE PLACE SATURDAY

KING CITY, Ont. - The province's top collegiate runners will compete in King City, Ont., on Saturday at the 2014 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Cross Country Championships.

Seneca College hosts this year's championships at its King Campus.

Fanshawe College made history at last year's event with its record fifth consecutive OCAA men's team title. If the Falcons are to six-peat, they will be led by Seth Marcaccio (Byron, Ont.), who podiumed at the three OCAA invitationals he competed in with an average time of 27:30, and teammate Ryan Foott (London, Ont.), who also had a pair of top five finishes.

Humber College is Fanshawe's top rival for the men's team crown, with a pair of wins at the Seneca and Fanshawe meets. The Hawks top runners are Daniel Bright (Brampton, Ont.) and Eric Bang (Oakville, Ont.), both with a pair of top 10 results.

Last year's individual OCAA silver medalist, Riley Hubbard-Olesky (Oshawa, Ont.) of Fleming College, is targeting a different colour on Saturday, having won on the King Campus course earlier in the month in a time of 28:42. He also won races at Fanshawe and St. Lawrence-Brockville, and should be considered a favourite on Saturday.

Rob Asselstine (Sydenham, Ont.) of St. Lawrence College (Kingston) will also challenge for an individual medal with a win at his home meet over Hubbard-Olesky, as well as a second place finish at Seneca.

On the women's side, Fanshawe's Morgan Hendriks (Dorechester, Ont.) won both the St. Lawrence-Kingston and Fanshawe meets, and teammate Nicole Barnardi (St. Thomas, Ont.) finished second at Fanshawe and Seneca. The Falcons are looking to dethrone defending women's team champion St. Clair College.

Humber will also contend for a team title having won two events. Lindsay Webster (Alton, Ont.) was the top woman at the Seneca meet.

Loyalist's Ashley Bickle (Tavistock, Ont.) will contend for an individual medal having podiumed three times this season, including first place at the St. Lawrence-Brockville meet.

Runners will represent 22 Ontario post-secondary campuses, including Cambrian, Centennial, Conestoga, Confederation, Fanshawe, Fleming, George Brown, Georgian, Humber, Lambton, Loyalist, Mohawk, Niagara, Redeemer, St. Clair, St. Lawrence (Brockville, Cornwall, Kingston), Sault, Seneca, Sheridan. The University of Toronto Mississauga will make its OCAA varsity debut at the meet.

The women's 5 km race begins at 11 a.m., while the men will race the 8 km course at 12 p.m.

King Campus is situated in the heart of the Oak Ridges Moraine and provides incredible, trails, views and activities.
