ASSELSTINE, MARCOLINI, WIN SCHOONERS INVITATIONAL

BROCKVILLE, Ont. - Treated like it was a national championship, the SLC-Brockville campus hosted a cross country invitational, featuring over over 200 runners from the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA), Ontario University Athletics (OUA), and the Quebec Student Sport Federation (RSEQ).

The race had great cooperation from mother nature, even having an unseasonal cold temperature and very high wind, both will likely be a factor for the national championships on Nov. 14.

Winning her third OCAA gold medal in the 2015-16 season was Emily Marcolini from Cambrian College (Sudbury, Ont.), finishing the five kilometre race in an impressive 18:57. Andréanne Marquis (Cégep de Sherbrooke) picked up the silver medal in 19:20, and Lucy Muhami (George Brown College) earned the bronze medal in 19:33.

"Running in the strong wind was definitely a challenge so I stayed behind a few runners a little longer than I normally would," said Marcolini.

"It was a great race on a challenging course. The memorial hill was a big challenge and I'm glad I had the opportunity to run it prior to nationals," Marcolini added.

In the women's team division Humber College took home the gold, with George Brown College winning silver and Fanshawe College picking up bronze.

In the men's race, SLC-Kingston's own Rob Asselstine sent a message to the OCAA and CCAA winning the eight kilometre race in 26:20, capturing his first gold medal in 2015-16. Jules Burnotte (Cégep de Sherbrooke) earned the silver medal, only 1.6 seconds behind Asselstine and .1 seconds ahead of third place Seth Marcaccio (Fanshawe College).

"It was great to have a positive result today, but I know the competition will not only be stronger but also more determined at nationals," said Asselstine.

On the men's team division side, the Humber College Hawks were just edged out for the silver medal by the Fanshawe College Falcons. Cégep de Sherbrooke took home the gold.

Invitational and national championship chair Brad Craig-Pettem was positive on the race as they host committee continues to prepare for the national championships.

"We had to make a few adjustments on the count of the heavy wind by taking down some signs, banners, and tents, but overall both races ran very well today," said Craig-Pettem. "As with any event, there is always room for improvement, but I'm happy with how races were delivered."
