MARCACCIO, STRAIN WIN OCAA CROSS COUNTRY GOLD MEDALS

KING CITY, Ont. - Two-time silver medalist Seth Marcaccio (Byron) of Fanshawe College was finally golden on Saturday, winning the men's eight kilometre race at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Cross Country Championships presented by belairdirect.

Marcaccio won in a time of 26:55, thirty-seven seconds faster than defending champion and silver medalist Rob Asselstine (Sydenham) of St. Lawrence-Kingston. Along with Marcaccio, Asselstine is now a three-time OCAA medalist, winning bronze in 2014.

Centennial's William Chemno (Kenya) earned the other podium spot, finishing in third place in a time of 27:35. Chemno was the top newcomer to the race, earning OCAA Rookie of the Year honours.

Fanshawe won the men's team title for the seventh time in eight seasons. Defending champion Humber took silver, while bronze went to Mohawk.

In the women's five kilometre race, Mary Strain (Fort Frances) of Cambrian became the new individual champion in a time of 20:28. Strain is the second straight Golden Shield runner to win the women's gold medal, following in Emily Marcolini's footsteps last year.

Humber's Kaitlin Shuvera (Prince George, B.C.) took the silver medal in a time of 21:37, ten seconds ahead of bronze medalist Stacey Andrews (Newmarket) of Fanshawe. As the top first-year runner, Shuvera earned OCAA Rookie of the Year honours. In the women's team standings, Humber three-peated as gold medalists, with St. Clair taking silver, and Conestoga earning bronze.

The top 14 runners in both races are named to the OCAA All-Ontario teams. These individuals are listed below.
