TORONTO – The Humber College athletic department is
pleased to announce the addition of men’s and women’s
curling, and women’s fastball to their slate of varsity
programs offered. The teams will enter Ontario College Athletic
Association (OCAA) play in the 2011-12 season.
With these sports coming on board the number of Humber varsity
programs has grown to 20 teams, the most of any OCAA member school
in the province.
A number of information sessions had taken place prior to this
announcement. Not only was there a number of interested student
athletes in attendance, the majority of them had significant
experience, and were in the early stages of their respective
academic programs.
“We are so pleased with these additions,” said Humber
director of athletics Doug Fox, “Not only does it present
more opportunities for students, it provides for gender equity
across all of our programs.”
Humber will join the existing OCAA women’s fastball league,
that currently features five teams from across Ontario. The
fastball league is a fall sport, with games starting in early
September followed by the provincial championship tournament in mid
October.
Curling returns to Humber after a 25-year absence. The Hawks will
participate in the tournament based sport which features
invitational tournaments in both the fall and winter semester,
culminating with the provincial championship bonspiel in mid
February.
Humber is known throughout the country for their outstanding
intercollegiate programs, and all efforts will be made to ensure
the successful entry of Hawks curling and women’s fastball to
the OCAA.
