OCAA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 2 RECAP

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Day 2 of OCAA curling action kicked off at 8:30 a.m. this morning at the YNCU Curling Centre. Draw 4 had six matches taking place across all three divisions.

In women's curling action, Fanshawe squared off against Mohawk, taking a 2-0 lead after the opening end. Fanshawe would continue to rock with single points in the second and third end, before a four-point end in the fifth. Fanshawe would end up winning its opening match of the day 8-2.

On the men's side, Sault faced off against Humber. Humber managed a single in the opening end, with Sault responding with a pair in the second end. Humber added two points in each of the fourth and fifth ends before a triple by Sault tied things up at 5. Humber would finish with five points in the seventh end, and a 10-5 victory.

The other men's match featured Fanshawe and Mohawk. Mohawk got out to an early 3-0 lead after three ends, with Fanshawe getting one back in the fourth. Mohawk got right back on track with a pair in the sixth end, and a steal in the seventh as it won the match 7-1.

On the mixed doubles side, Sault-2 faced off against Fleming-2. Sault-2 managed a single point in the opening end, but Fleming-2 would take over the match from there, only surrendering a pair of points en route to a 7-3 win.

Sault-1 looked to stay perfect as it started its opening match against Humber with a single point in the first end. Humber managed to score two in the second and stole a single in the third and fourth ends before cruising to a 7-3 victory.

The final mixed doubles match of the draw saw Mohawk score early and often as it got out to a 4-0 lead over Fleming-1 in the first end, and a pair of singles in ends three and four. Mohawk would cruise to an 11-1 victory in its opening match of the day.

DRAW 5

The fifth draw of the OCAA championships got underway at the YNCU Curling Centre with a trio of mixed doubles matches.

The first match saw Sault-2 face off against Mohawk, with the Mountaineers grabbing a point in each of the first three ends. Sault-2 responded with a single of its own in the fourth end. Both teams swapped three-point ends in the fifth and sixth before Sault-2 managed four points over the final two ends to secure an 8-6 victory.

Fleming-1 continued its championship against Fanshawe. Fanshawe jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after end one, with Fleming-1 squaring the score 3-3 after the third end. The game remained tied up at six until the seventh end, where Fanshawe grabbed three points. Fleming-1 responded with three points of its own in the eighth end, setting up an extra end. Fanshawe managed a single for the 10-9 win in the match.

The final match of the draw saw Fleming-2 compete with Humber for top seed in the division. Humber scored a deuce in the opening end, before Fleming-2 grabbed points across the next three ends to take a 4-2 lead. Fleming-2 went into the eighth end with a three-point lead before Humber's late game heroics prevailed again with a four-point end securing a 7-6 victory.

DRAW 6

Draw 6 of the OCAA championships was another six game draw across all three divisions.

Women's action saw the top two teams, Humber and Fanshawe face off, with Humber scoring a pair in the second end. Fanshawe responded with a single in the third before Humber added another three points in the fourth end as it cruised to an 8-2 victory.

In the men's division, Confederation took on Mohawk. The Mountaineers notched two in the opening end of their match-up. Teams exchanged singles across the next two ends before Mohawk took over and won the match 6-1.

The second men's matchup featured Fanshawe and Humber, with Humber getting out to a 4-1 lead after the opening three ends. It was smooth sailing from then on out for Humber as it won 7-1.

In mixed curling, Sault-1 and Fleming-2 battled hard, with Fleming-2 picking up a single in each of the opening two ends. Sault-1 would begin to take control of the match with a single in end three, and two points in each of ends four, five and six. Sault-1 earned one more point in the seventh before cruising to an 8-2 victory.

Sault-2 and Fanshawe had a high stakes game with each team battling to stay alive. Sault-2 would take a single point in each of the first two ends. Fanshawe would manage a single in the fourth end to cut the deficit to 4-1. Sault-2 continued how it started and won the game 7-2.

The final mixed doubles match saw top-seeded Humber fall behind early against Mohawk after managing four points in the opening end. Mohawk continued its strong play with three points in the fourth end, and three points in the fifth end. The Mountaineers went on to win its match with a final score of 11-2.

DRAW 7

The final draw of Day 2 went at 8:30 p.m. at the YNCU Curling Centre.

The final women's match was played between Mohawk and Humber. Humber began quickly with three points in first end, before stealing four and three points in the following ends. Humber would cruise to its final victory of the round robin with a score of 14-0.

On the men's side of things, Sault faced off against Fanshawe. Sault earned a single point in each of the first two ends before stealing two in the third end. Sault ended up winning 8-0.

The other men's match in the final round robin draw was between Confederation and Humber. Humber managed a pair in the first end and stole three in the second. Confederation would respond with three points in the third end but would not get any closer. Humber would win the game with a final score of 10-3.

In mixed doubles action, Fleming-2 and Mohawk faced off in a game that Mohawk came out quick taking two points in the opening end, stealing one in the second and another in the third. Mohawk would steal two more in the fourth and win the match 6-0.

Sault-1 would take on Fleming-1 in its final round robin match. Sault-1 got up 4-1 after the first four ends, before a four-point fifth end put it safely in front. Sault-1 would go on to win 11-1.

Humber and Fanshawe were the final mixed match of the round robin. Fanshawe managed a pair in the opening end with Humber responding with four points of its own in the second end. Humber would steal three points in the third and one more in the fourth. Fanshawe would get two points back in the fifth end but would fall 8-4.

Semi-finals start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the YNCU Curling Centre.
