OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON BEGINS WITH GOLF

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) autumn gold rush goes into full swing this Monday when its top golfers compete at the OCAA Golf Championships.

The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs Monday through Wednesday at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ont., and is hosted by St. Clair College.

Reigning women's national champion Hayley McCallum (Mississauga) of Humber College aims to make history with a fifth provincial medal, having previously won two gold and two silvers. Teammate Madison Ouellette (Amaranth) is the defending OCAA champion and looks to join McCallum as a back-to-back winner. Along with Elaine Surjoprajogo (Brampton), all three Hawks have reached the podium the last two seasons as they look to put an exclamation mark on their period of preeminence.

Former OCAA silver medalist Shannon Coffey (Windsor) has been St. Clair's top women's golfer for several seasons and gives the host the best opportunity at winning a medal.

Defending men's national champion Matthew Bremer (Toronto) will lead a strong Humber team which dominated the three lead-in competitions heading into the championship. Teammate Daniel Talmage (Toronto) and Ben Landers (Delaware) of Fanshawe College look to return to the OCAA podium after earning bronze and silver, respectively, last year.

Approximately 60 golfers will represent 10 Ontario college campuses, including Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Georgian, Humber, Loyalist, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Lawrence and Sault.

The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The men's and women's player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.

Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.

Designed by world renowned architect Thomas McBroom, Ambassador Golf Club continues to receive Canada wide recognition for its incredible design as well as playability for players of all skill levels. As one of the premier public golf courses in Ontario, Ambassador offers players from all skill levels a chance to play to their abilities. The Scottish/Irish-links look to the golf course features "an aggressive bunkering style featuring dramatic fescue banks that provide playing strategy and definition," says McBroom.

OCAA golfers will participate in a practice round on Sunday before teeing off for real on Monday. Daily results at the championships will be available online via the championship website and OCAA.com.

The top OCAA golfers and teams will move on to compete at the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Golf National Championships presented by PING. The event takes place at the Lorette Golf Club in Quebec City from Oct. 16-20.
