A GRIZZLY THWARTS HAWKS LEADERBOARD SWEEP AFTER DAY 1

WINDSOR, Ont. - Unseasonably warm temperatures greeted the 56 student-athletes competing at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ont., on Monday.

Three Humber Hawks top the men's leaderboard after 18 holes, all shooting better than par. Ryan Holwell (St. John's, Nfld.) is the clubhouse leader firing an impressive three-under 68, one better than Daniel Talmage (Toronto) with Trey Ross (Winnipeg, Man.) rounding out the trio with a 70. A couple of Fanshawe Falcons are just one behind podium position with Brent Schidowka (Komoka) and Ben Landers (Delaware) both shooting an even-par 71.

Humber and Fanshawe top the first day men's team standings, with the Hawks leading the Falcons by 11 strokes. The host St. Clair Saints hold the bronze medal position 24 shots behind the leaders.

Bryden Dilley (Barrie) of the Georgian Grizzlies put the women's field on notice, shooting a one-under 70 to take a two-shot lead into Tuesday's middle round. A trio of Humber Hawks are giving Dilley chase, including two-time OCAA and defending national champion Hayley McCallum (Mississauga) who shot a one-over 72. Defending OCAA gold medalist Madison Ouellette (Amaranth) shot 75, while three-time provincial bronze medalist Elaine Surjoprajogo (Brampton) fired a 78. Humber leads the team standings by 14 strokes over the Saints.

The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs through Wednesday. Golfers represent 10 Ontario college campuses, including Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Georgian, Humber, Loyalist, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Lawrence and Sault.

The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The men's and women's player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.

Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.
