OCAA MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is proud to announce the 2007 Men’s and Women’s Soccer all-stars and major award winners. The award winners were honoured at the 2007 Soccer Championship Banquet that took place on Thursday, October 25 hosted by Algonquin College in Ottawa. Greg Remijn of the Fanshawe Falcons and Katie Szeghalmi of the Durham Lords earned top honours being named the OCAA Player of the Year for men’s and women’s soccer.

Greg Remijn, a third-year striker from Fanshawe had a tremendous season leading the Falcons to their first Championship appearance since 2004. Remijn led his Falcons to a 6-2-1 record this season scoring 11 goals in eight games including the lone goal in Fanshawe’s 1-0 victory in the quarterfinal round. The team captain was also named a CCAA All-Canadian, an OCAA All-Star, while finishing second overall in league scoring. For his efforts, Remijn will go forward as the OCAA nominee for the 2007 CCAA Men’s National Soccer Player of the Year to be announced in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the CCAA Soccer Nationals.

League scoring champion Robert Malbasic of the St. Clair Saints and Peter O’Donnell of the number one ranked George Brown Huskies were also announced as CCAA All-Canadians.

For the fifth consecutive season, a member of the Durham Lords women’s soccer team has been named OCAA Player of the Year. Katie Szeghalmi, a second-year forward from Oshawa, earned that honour as she helped lead the Lords to an undefeated 9-0-0 season record. Szeghalmi led the OCAA in scoring with 12 goals, going on to being named a league all-star and a CCAA All-Canadian.

“Katie is a hard working, talented soccer player who is an all-around great athlete”, commented Durham head coach Vaso Vujanovic. “She is a very skilled player who gives 100% effort to the team’s performance. She is unselfish who always puts her team-mates first.”

Also being honoured as a CCAA All-Canadian was Fanshawe defender Emily Costello. This marks the second consecutive year Costello was recognized for the award.
