The Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa) were one win away from winning
their second consecutive national championship but mother nature
had other plans as a severe snow storm blew in and caused the gold
medal game to be suspended at the 2007 Big Kahuna/adidas Canadian
Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s and Women’s
Soccer Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
After much deliberation, the host organizing committee has decided
to reschedule the game. The CCAA will be making a decision on
Tuesday, November 13 via conference call to determine when and
where the two teams will play.
The teams managed to play the entire first half, but despite
controlling the majority of the play, Algonquin was unable to find
the back of the net against Champlain Regional College of St.
Lambert, Quebec.
In their quest for the national championship, the Thunder qualified
for their fourth consecutive national title match after going 2-0
in round robin action. The Thunder defeated the University of New
Brunswick (Saint John) 5-0 in the opening game of the championship
and secured their spot in the national title game with a 3-1
victory over Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops, BC).
With Thompson Rivers and Algonquin knotted at one goal apiece with
a title berth on the line, 2006-07 OCAA Athlete of the Year Loui
Legakis scored on a free kick from 18 yards out giving the Thunder
a 2-1 lead. Will Beauge, who scored a hat trick on Wednesday, added
an insurance marker in the 89th minute, securing the two goal
victory for the Thunder and getting the Thunder one win away from a
national title. Mike Gagliano of the Thunder was recognized as the
Player of the Game.
