MOHAWK ADVANCES TO MEN'S SOCCER QUARTER-FINALS

HAMILTON, Ont. - In one of the wilder OCAA men’s soccer qualifier games in recent memory, the Mohawk Mountaineers and Niagara Knights struck for a combined 10 goals on Tuesday. But it was host Mohawk that will advance to the OCAA quarter-finals with a 6-4 overtime victory.

Mohawk netted two goals in overtime to secure the win. Second-year striker Adam Petrina (Grimsby, Ont.) earned a hat trick for the Mountaineers after scoring just one goal during the regular season, and third-year player Adam Bond (Hamilton, Ont.) contributed two goals. Fifth-year teammate Sirwan Irandost (Niagara Falls, Ont.) added a single marker. Four Mountaineers tied for the team lead in goals during the regular season with two.

Second-year midfielder Derek Paterson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) booted a pair of goals for Niagara in a losing effort. First-year players Komar Irandost (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Jordan Arnott (London, Ont.) also scored for the Knights. Paterson and Arnott shared the team lead in goals during the regular season with two each.

The outcome was a far cry from their meeting in the regular season finale for both teams. Niagara and Mohawk battled to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 7.

Mohawk (5-1-3, 1-0 playoffs) will now travel to La Cite Collegiale (5-2-1) in the OCAA quarter-finals. The winner will advance to the OCAA soccer championship tournament, Oct. 29-30.
