KINGSTON, Ont. – Former St. Lawrence
College Kingston Male Athlete of the Year (2005-06) Steve
Douglas was named Vikings men's soccer head coach, as
announced by Tri-Campus Athletic Director Brad
Greenwood Tuesday, July 5, 2011.
Douglas grabs the reigns after serving the
role of assistant for the past five years alongside Ryan Poser, who
stepped down to pursue other endeavours. He takes over a Vikings
squad that finished 2-2-1 last season, just shy of a playoff
spot.
“We are delighted to introduce Steve
Douglas as head coach of our men's varsity soccer team at SLC
Kingston,” Greenwood commented. “Steve has paid his
dues as an assistant coach and his playing career speaks for
itself. We are confident in Steve's abilities as a coach and expect
great things as a result of his
leadership.”
Boasting an impeccable soccer pedigree,
Douglas carries over 15 years of coaching experience and an
outstanding playing career. The Kingston native currently coaches
the Kingston Clippers U-17 girls team and was the head coach of the
Frontenac Secondary School boys soccer program, which qualified for
the OFSAA Championships seven of his eleven years at the
helm.
“Obtaining the head coaching role for
this program was one of my goals,” Douglas said.
“Another one is to build this program into a constant
contender each season.”
Douglas also coached various teams at the
Kingston Women's Soccer Club and holds a National Coaching
Certification Program (NCCP) Level III coaching
certificate.
“His vast experience and infectious
affinity with Vikings soccer will be invaluable to our soccer
program and to the athletes that represent us,” Greenwood
continued. “It is always great to have an alumnus and a
former star athlete return to St. Lawrence to lead our
teams.”
As a player, Douglas collected several
accolades including SLC Kingston Male Athlete of the Year
(2005-06). He was a five-time OCAA East Region All-Star and a
three-time OCAA All-Star. He competed on both the outdoor and
indoor teams for the Vikings, where he was named team MVP seven
times.
