WINDSOR, Ont. - With his next goal, St. Clair's men's soccer
student-athlete Robert Malbasic will reach a
milestone not seen in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association
(OCAA) in 28 years.
Malbasic is one goal shy of tying the all-time OCAA career record
of 47, set by OCAA Hall of Famer Mike Everson of
Fleming-Peterborough. Everson played with the Knights for three
seasons spanning 1981-82 to 1983-84.
Malbasic is in his fifth season with the Saints, and scored in a
4-1 loss to Sheridan on Sunday to inch closer to the milestone. His
best seasonal output came in 2009-10 when he scored 17 goals and
won the OCAA scoring championship. Malbasic was also a scoring
champion in his rookie campaign when in 2007-08 he debuted with 12
goals. The forward added another 10 to his career total the
following season, and scored six times in 2010-11.
By comparison, Everson's best season came in 1982-83 when he scored
19 goals to lead all of OCAA. He was also the OCAA scoring champion
the following season when he scored 17 times. Everson debuted with
11 goals in his freshman season.
Malbasic has six chances in the next 17 days to become the all-time
OCAA scoring leader. St. Clair has matches at Mohawk on Friday, and
Redeemer on Saturday.
