SHERIDAN 1, FANSHAWE 1

LONDON, Ont. (September 12) - They lacked cohesion, ball control and a desire to compete when possession of the ball was in dispute, but thanks to an equalizing goal in the dying stages, the Sheridan Bruins men's soccer team (0-0-1 OCAA) managed to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw with Fanshawe.

"We couldn't control the ball, nobody was moving and defensively we were terrible," head coach Andrew Seuradge said. "On a positive note we did get a point, so we'll take it but we need to go back to the drawing board and figure some things out."

While both sides failed to score in the first half, it was Fanshawe that was controlling the pace and showing more intensity in trying to win balls in the air.

As a result, they had the two best scoring chances - in the 14th minute a shot on target was turned aside by Antonio Ilic while the left post saved the Bruins in the 35th minute.

The home side would eventually find the score sheet in the 66th minute when the ball was swung in from the left side of the Sheridan box and then headed downward, bouncing off the turf and past Ilic.

At first this did not ignite the double-blue, as Fanshawe continued to press forward. They had another good chance, but Ilic was once again there for the save.

Finally, in the 85th minute, Sheridan was able to equalize, though in a flukey scenario.

A long ball was played towards the top of the Fanshawe box where Kevin Avila was put in a foot race against the opposition's keeper.

While Avila won the race, he didn't get enough of the ball to definitively bury it in the back of the net.

However when two Fanshawe defenders converged in a clearance attempt, they hit each other and the ball ended up crossing the line.

Still in a paradoxical state - one minute frustrated by the performance, the next relieved to have stolen a point - Seuradge was very direct in assessing how the club would approach the next week leading up to their next game at Mohawk on September 19.

"The next practices we'll be back training hard, a lot of work on our formation and a lot of defensive work," he said. "Most importantly we need everyone there to make it most effective. We don't want any missed practices from here on."
