CENTENNIAL 2, SENECA 0

The word stifling pretty well sums up the Wednesday nights home opener at Newnham Field between the Seneca Sting and Centennial Colts.  The Colts (2-0) held their position defensively, supported each other and came away with a 2-0 victory in their second match of the season.  The Colts have now outscored their opponents 6-0 on the young season including their 4-0 victory over St. Lawrence (K).

Seneca controlled most of the action throughout the ninety minutes, but were unable to beat Philip Liscio in the Colts' goal.  Liscio made a number of key saves to secure the shutout, frustrating the Sting shooters all night long.

Centennial opened the scoring in the 43th minute on a beautiful goal by E.J. Powell.  The goal started with a nice cross which Powell brought down with his left foot, took one step and proceeded to strike a high curling shot with his right foot past a diving Andrew Cairns into the top right corner of the net.

From there, the Colts tightened up defensively allowing Seneca only a handful of quality opportunities from the outside.

In the 53rd minute, third year Sting Joey Amato struck a shot from 25 yards out which found its way through a number of bodies before bouncing off the waiting left shoulder of Liscio.  Three minutes later, Cairns kept his team in the match with a diving stop to prevent a crossing attempt off the right foot of Powell.

The Colts offense went through Powell all night and in the 62nd minute, he struck again with his second of the match.  A high cross from his Colts teammate was placed perfectly just feet from goal.  Powell elevated himself over the defender and redirected the ball into the net.

The Sting were only able to muster one more quality scoring chance which came off the foot of David Alva.  The second year Police Foundations student put on a show, dribbling in and out of traffic, past defenders before firing a shot just wide of the goal.

The Seneca Sting (0-1-0) get back in action Sunday as they host the Cambrian Golden Shield while the Colts (2-0-0) travel to Fleming on September 20.
