MOHAWK 3, SHERIDAN 2

The Mohawk men's soccer team built a 3-0 lead then had to hold on in stoppage time to nip Sheridan 3-2 in OCAA action at Redeemer University College Wednesday night (Sep. 19).

Nathan Samuel's hard shot was stopped, but Abdullah Abdullah was right there to drive the rebound home to put the Mountaineers in front. It was the only goal of the first half. Mohawk took a 2-0 lead after being awarded an indirect free kick in the Bruins area. Momo Veljko somehow managed to blast the ball home despite a Sheridan wall that was charging at him. Zachary Waldik seemed to put the game out of reach when he made it 3-0. It could have been four when Veljko had two cracks at a penalty shot. Acrobatic Sheridan goalie Michael Adjei-Kwarteng stopped the Mohawk player, but it was ruled the keeper had left his line too early. Veljko tried it again, but was stopped once more.

Three minutes of stoppage time was added at the end of the game and the Bruins scored not  once, but twice. First Manny Morgado connected on a header. The dust had hardly settled when David Velastegui got his team back to within one goal. Mohawk goalkeeper Alex Mickeloff stopped a shot with just seconds to go and the Mountaineers survived to improve their record to 2-1. Sheridan now has a draw and a loss.

Earlier, after a scoreless first half, the Sheridan women scored all their goals in the second half for a 4-0 win over Mohawk.

Kaitlyn MacLellan scored twice, including one on a penalty and Kaylyn McEathron  and Kendra Cooper got the other goals for the Bruins.

Sheridan is now 2-0 while Mohawk slips to 1-2.
