Only 11 days after being embarrassed 8-1 by Fanshawe on their own field, the Mohawk men's soccer team fashioned an incredible about face and defeated the Falcons on penalty kicks in their OCAA playoff qualifier Saturday (Oct. 13) right in London.

The two teams, playing in drizzly conditions, went through 90 minutes of regulation play and then 30 minutes of extra time without scoring. That took the game to penalties where it took seven rounds of shooters before Zachary Waldick scored what proved to be the game winner. It still took a save from Mohawk goalkeeper Alex Mickeloff to end the match.

Other scorers for the Mountaineers in the shootout were Matt Kernick, Nenad Njegovan, Patryk Korbut and Abdullah Abdullah.

After the thrashing the Falcons gave Mohawk on October 2, Mountaineers' head coach Richard Bennett told his team they had nothing to lose, even though he admitted he was quietly confident they could do it. "I told them, play with heart. It's up to you. Play 100 percent and they gave 100 percent." Bennett said his team had chances to score during regulation time. "It just wasn't to be,"  said Bennett, but we were the better team today."

With the victory, Mohawk now must play a crossover playoff game at Seneca on Sunday October 21, hoping to advance to the OCAA Championship at Redeemer the following weekend.
