HUMBER 3, MOHAWK 1

HUMBER 3, MOHAWK 1

ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The reigning national champs kicked off the 2013 campaign in impressive fashion tonight, as the Hawks men's soccer team soundly defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers at Valley Field North.

The game got off to a slow start, as through 10 minutes neither team had a scoring chance and the action seemed to stall around midfield. That changed quickly though, as the Hawks had a chance to take an early lead on a brilliant cross but striker Nikola Negojevic's shot just squeaked wide. The opportunity was a sign of things to come for Humber.

Negojevic made up for his miscue mere minutes later, as he tallied the Hawks first goal of the season on a beautifully placed balled on the lower left corner. Around the 30 minute mark, Humber capitalized again as Augustin de Medina put a beautiful cross in the box and Daniel Braga tapped it in. Minutes before half, Braga would tally his second of the game off another great cross, giving the Hawks a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the heat took its toll and the scoring chances came few and far between. The Mountaineers got on the board late, breaking up goaltender Eugenio Garro's perfect game. The Hawks would wrap the game up with some solid defence to ensure the win, and after a summer of anticipation are off to another solid start.

The team will look to continue the momentum on Saturday, as they will hit the road to face Niagara in the squads first road contest.

ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The Mohawk men's soccer team opened the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season with a 3-1 loss to Humber in Etobicoke Tuesday (Sept. 10).

The reigning national champion Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 half time lead.

The Mountaineers lone goal was scored by Alex Mitic, who was setup nicely by Patryk Korbut.

Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett said his side had a slow start. "Being a 'rookie' team I think we may have put pressure on ourselves," said Bennett. "We calmed down during the half and were a lot better in the second. Patryk hit the bar in the second half. We missed two to three other good chances to score as well. We are looking forward to Saturday's (Sept. 14) game against Conestoga."

The game against the Condors will be in Kitchener.

The Mountaineers home opener will be Friday, Sept. 20 at the Redeemer Sports Complex, when they meet the Lambton Lions of Sarnia.
