DURHAM 1, SENECA 1

NORTH YORK, Ont. - The Durham College men's soccer team missed out on a golden opportunity to earn a bye to the OCAA crossover round as they tied the Seneca Sting 1-1 on Saturday.

Needing a win to earn a bye, the Lords looked as if they were in the driver's seat after Sherlon Drummand (Ajax, Ont.) scored in the sixth minute to give them a 1-0 lead.

With 10 minutes left in the game, Durham was awarded a penalty kick with the opportunity to put the game on ice. However, captain Duncan Mitchell's shot attempt was stopped by the Seneca goalie, keeping the Sting alive.

Six minutes later, Seneca striker Mauricio Chamalé would tie the game at one goal apiece as he put home a header. Time would eventually run out on the Lords as the teams played to the 1-1 draw.

Seneca and Durham finish the regular season with matching 5-2-1 records, with the Sting holding the tiebreaker (goals for/goals against) to give them third place in the standings. Algonquin and Centennial earned the byes as they finished one-two respectively.

Durham will now host an OCAA playoff qualifying game on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Lords will either host St. Lawrence or Fleming with kick-off at 3 p.m.
