HUMBER 1, ALGONQUIN 0

OTTAWA - The OCAA men's soccer championship have officially wrapped up.

The day started off with an intense match between Fanshawe College and Sheridan College. The game went into additional time and at the end of the 120 minutes, there was no scorer, therefore leading the teams into a shoot out.

After seven shooters, a winner was decided. Sheridan would take the bronze medal. Sheridan defender Jennison Flores and Fanshawe midfielder Brandon Mendes were named Players of the Game.

At 2 p.m. the gold medal match between long-time rivals Humber and Algonquin College began. Through the intense wind and near freezing temperatures, the men fought hard leaving the field for half time with no score.

In the 80th minute of the game, Algonquin received a caution in the box, which resulted in a penalty shot for the Hawks. The Hawks capitalized on the opportunity and led the game 1-0.

The last couple of minutes were the most intense but Humber would hold onto their lead and finish the weekend as the OCAA provincial champions.

Championship all-star awards were given to the following:

Matthew Santos – Sheridan Bruins
Alex Asmis – Algonquin College
Isaac Johnson – Algonquin College
Dino Gardner – Humber College
Alexander Pothemont
– Humber College

Championship MVP was awarded to Gerardo Magno from the gold medal Humber Hawks.

Despite the temperature it was a great weekend filled with some of the best soccer the province has to offer. Congratulations to all participants, players and coaches.
