SHERIDAN 2, REDEEMER 1

OAKVILLE, Ont. - Given all they could handle by divisional foe Redeemer, the Sheridan Bruins men's soccer team (7-1-1 OCAA) had more than a few white-knuckle moments down the stretch, but they managed to hang on for a 2-1 win in the OCAA qualifier playoff.

"The positive part is that we got the result," Sheridan head coach Andrew Seuradge said. "Playing wise, we were not great today. My boys looked like they were out of it, they didn't keep their shape, couldn't control the ball, couldn't pass it, but with that we still get to keep playing."

Sheridan actually held the lead for all but the first few seconds, as Jonathan Rufino scored in the first minute to give the homeside the early lead.

That lead would double in the 32nd minute, when the Bruins were awarded a penalty kick after a Redeemer defender handled the ball in the box.

Chris Divizio-Mendes promptly stepped to the spot and converted to make it a 2-0 game.

However, Redeemer was able to pull one back nearing the interval on a free kick just outside the area.

The ball was played directly at the wall, but when a pair of Sheridan players dipped out of the way, it snuck through and just out of the reach of Patryk Zaptoczny.

In the second half both sides had a few quality scoring opportunities, but neither were able to find that last touch necessary to capitalize.

The Double-Blue will now advance to the quarter-finals and will take to the road to play Centennial on Oct. 20.

Seuradge says that in the week of preparation the team will try to get back to the way they were playing in September.

"We're back to the drawing board," he said. "We need to get back to the way we were playing a couple weeks ago. We should get a bit of a boost with getting some guys back, Mathew (Santos) off the red card and Nicholas (Lindsay) back from some health issues."
