SHERIDAN 9, MOHAWK 1

ANCASTER, Ont. - Kayla McPerson's goal, with just seven minutes remaining, gave the Sheridan Bruins a 3-2 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers in the opening game of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women's soccer season at the Redeemer Sports Complex Saturday.

The visitors from Oakville, Ont., needed fewer than two minutes to open the scoring as Alexis Borges struck. Mohawk nearly equalized when Leanne Gyenes hit the crossbar.

The Mountaineers finally got on even terms when Jessica Minor pounced on the ball after an excellent cross from Laura Fable eluded a pair of Bruins' defenders in the 38th minute.

Eight minutes after the break, Michaela Krampert got free and slotted the ball home to give Sheridan a 2-1 lead.

Fable, a first-year midfielder from Hamilton, Ont., found some space and made no mistake, tying the score for Mohawk in the 68th minute.

However, McPherson spoiled things for the home side with the late winner.

The Bruins played the last 10 minutes down a player after Kendra Cooper was dismissed for a second yellow card.

In the men's game, Sheridan stunned Mohawk 9-1.

The Mountaineers actually opened the scoring, against the run of play, on a Colin Dougan penalty in the 13th minute. But three minutes later the Bruins tied it, on an outstanding free kick by David Velastegui as he curled the ball around the wall and in off the post from just outside the penalty area.

Raheem Edwards scored in the 30th minute and then again two minutes later to give the visitors a 3-1 lead at the half.

Edwards then completed a hat trick, a minute after the resumption of play and then the next minute Velastegui notched his second to make it 5-1.

Mohawk's Dougan was red carded about 10 minutes into the second half and the Mountaineers played a man short the rest of the way.

Manny Morgado scored for the Bruins in the 59th minute, Molham Babouli scored twice, in the 62nd and 66th minutes and Alex Dukovski completed the scoring in the 81st minute.

ANCASTER, Ont. - It was an dynamic start to the season for the Sheridan Bruins men's soccer team (1-0 OCAA) as they exploded for nine goals in a 9-1 triumph over Mohawk to kickoff their year.

"I thought that right off the bat we did a good job of controlling the game and tempo," Sheridan head coach Andrew Seuradge said. "We had some good opportunities in the first half and only managed to capitalize on a couple, but we turned that around in the second half and got the three points."

Raheem Edwards notched a hat trick in his Sheridan debut, while David Velastegui and Molham Babouli each contributed a brace with Manny Morgado and Alex Dukovski rounding out the Sheridan scoring.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Seuradge knows there are still some areas for the team to clean up and says that with a full week to prepare before their next contest (hosting Redeemer on Sept. 13) they will try to focus on the team specific elements.

"We definitely have some work to do, so it was good to see today what we have specifically to work on," he said. "We have a pretty deep team and some pretty skilled players, but it's a team game, so we'll put a lot of emphasis on set pieces this week."
