KINGSTON, Ont. - Both the Vikings and Lords men's soccer teams would play through heavy rain right from the opening kick till half way through the first half, in the season opener of the 2014-15 Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) season.

SLC fell victim to an unfortunate bounce off a free kick in the 40th minute that proved to be the game winning goal in the 1-0 defeat. Bartosz Kalisz would be credited with the goal.

"Soccer is a cruel game. The guys played really hard for their first game, had one bad bounce that cost us the only goal," said SLC head coach Steve Douglas.

The heavy rain for the first 20 minutes of the game created a very slick and fast pitch resulting in several miscues and squandered scoring opportunities throughout the remaining 70 minutes.
Having two strikers with great speed, the Vikings would go back to sending a long pass to Gabe Jones. But the Lords' defence would either intercept or clear the majority of chances for the Vikings.

In the 83rd minute, Jones would send a great cross that caught the Lords sleeping. The pass was headed just wide of the net, narrowly missing the far post. The opportunity would be as close as the Vikings would get, forcing SLC to settle with the 1-0 loss.

SLC will play back-to-back road games next weekend, playing the Centennial College Colts on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. Twenty-five hours later, the Vikings play the Seneca College Sting at 4:15 p.m. The next home game takes place on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. against the Algonquin College Thunder.

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Durham College men's soccer team earned a win in Dave Ashfield's OCAA coaching debut as they picked up a 1-0 road victory over the St. Lawrence Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

First-year goalkeeper Kevin Collins (Cedar Valley, Ont.) earned a shutout in his first conference game of the season, which included periods of heavy rain throughout the game.

Durham's Bartosz Kalisz (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the contest in the 40th minute, as he capitalized on a free kick opportunity.

The Lords defence did a good job of containing St. Lawrence's offensive threats the entire night as they intercepted and cleared the majority of the Vikes' crossing attempts.

Durham will now look ahead to the sixth annual campus cup, which will take place on Monday night against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Kick-off is at 6:30 p.m. following the women's game.
