ALGONQUIN 3, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 0

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Vikings men's soccer team was looking for their first win of the season against the 3-0 Algonquin College Thunder on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Both teams would play a very physical game, each looking to take advantage of the referees letting the teams play. As the game went on, the pace of the game began to wear on the Vikings with several players suffering injuries throughout the game. Combined with the fast pace, SLC would not be able to pull the game within reach, eventually losing the game, 3-0.

Algonquin would open the scoring in the 22nd minute with the Thunder striker sent in all alone on a breakaway. Just two minutes later, Algonquin struck again on a loose scramble in front of the net to go up 2-0.

Just before halftime, the physical play reached a boiling point causing a free kick for Algonquin just outside the 18-yard box. The strike would bounce off the Vikings defensive wall and safely out of play.

The second half featured more physical play, but the Vikings would settle in and create a handful of scoring chances, including a header that just grazed the crossbar. SLC goalkeeper, Patrick Sauve, would make two great saves late in the game that prevented the game from getting completely out of reach.

Algonquin would add one more goal in the 80th minute for the 3-0 victory.

The Vikings will face the Cambrian College Golden Shield on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. at home. The weather is currently predicting heavy rain and potential for a thunderstorm.
