NUNES NAMED CCAA MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Marcos Nunes of the Humber Hawks has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Player of the Year.

Nunes received the award this evening during the CCAA All-Canadian Banquet at the 2016 CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship, hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Alta.

"He will be fun to watch and tough to contain at this year's CCAA National Championship and is a very deserving recipient of the CCAA Player of the Year award," said David Munro, CCAA Men's Soccer Convenor.

Nunes was the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Player of the Year and scoring champion with 10 goals in nine games. He led Humber to a perfect 10-0 record as the Hawks outscored their opponents 37-4 in the regular season and defeated rival Algonquin in the OCAA final to capture their fifth provincial crown in the last six years.

This is Nunes' third season wearing the Hawks uniform and he is already a two-time CCAA gold medalist. He was named tournament MVP at the 2013 CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship in Saint John, N.B.

Nunes is gentlemanly on the field but perhaps his greatest value to the Hawks is his ability to elevate his game and consistently be the leader in big-game situations.

"Marco is the "go-to" player on the No. 1 ranked team in the CCAA," said Munro. "He has already proven that he thrives under pressure on the big stage and he scores big goals at crucial times."

Nunes has had a vast array of experiences as a soccer athlete, one that has brought him across the country and into Europe as well. He actively shares these experiences with teammates and soccer enthusiasts in the area, in hopes of growing the sport as well as the athletes who play the game.

Other nominees for the CCAA Player of the Year award were Shun Takano of the VIU Mariners (PACWEST), Stefan Cukovic of the Lakeland Rustlers (ACAC), Kosta Rougas of the Dawson Blues (RSEQ) and Ibrahima Sanoh of the Holland Hurricanes (ACAA).

CCAA Player of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA National Championship Awards Banquet.
