LAYNE HEADLINES OCAA MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS

TORONTO - Sheridan College's Jevontae Layne (Brampton, Ont.) is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Soccer Player of the Year.

The second-year forward scored eight times in six matches during the regular season, helping lead Sheridan to an undefeated season and a South Division Championship. Layne was ranked second in overall scoring this season and is the South Division Scoring Champion. Along with being named South Division Player of the Year, Layne is a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and an OCAA All-Star.

Luca Gasparotto (Ajax, Ont.) of Humber is the second of three CCAA All-Canadians from the OCAA. The fifth-year defender scored in a pair of games during the regular season, and was part of a last line of defence which allowed just six goals against as Humber won both the Central Division Championship and the Central Division Best Defensive Team. Along with being named Central Division Player of the Year, Gasparotto is an OCAA All-Star.

Fanshawe's Mike Sneddon (Mount Brydges, Ont.) is also a CCAA All-Canadian. The fourth-year striker scored seven goals in six matches, including a hat trick in a key 5-0 win over St. Clair on Oct. 12 which clinched the West Division Championship for Fanshawe. Sneddon is the West Division Scoring Champion, West Division Player of the Year and an OCAA All-Star.

Skylar Grey (Ajax, Ont.) of Durham is the East Division Player of the Year. The second-year striker is also the East Division Scoring Champion tallying six goals in six matches, helping lead Durham to an East Division Championship. Grey is also an OCAA All-Star.

Jalen Loague (London, Ont.) of Fanshawe is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The midfielder/striker scored five times in six matches, including a pair against Conestoga on Sept. 29. The West Division Rookie of the Year is also an OCAA All-Star. Other nominees for the OCAA Rookie of the Year award were East Division Rookie of the Year Isaac Moniz (Pontypool, Ont.) of Durham; Central Division Rookie of the Year Abubaker Hussein (Toronto, Ont.) of George Brown; and South Division Rookie of the Year Jaedyn Bell Saunders (Brampton, Ont.) of Sheridan.

Sheridan's Andrew Seuradge is the OCAA Coach of the Year and a nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The South Division Coach of the Year led his Sheridan squad to a regular season championship, outscoring opponents 22-9 en route to a 5-0-1 record. Sheridan also earned honours as the Best Defensive Team in the division. Other nominees for the OCAA Coach of the Year award were East Division Coach of the Year Carlo Cannovan of St. Lawrence; Central Division Coach of the Year Drew Johnson of Sault; and West Division Coach of the Year Rob Pereira of Fanshawe.

Humber's Karamvir Mehmi (Brampton, Ont.) is the OCAA and Central Division Scoring Champion, leading all players with nine goals in five matches.

Individuals are also honoured for their defensive efforts. Co-East Division Defensive Players of the Year are Mcabner Aristide (Pickering, Ont.) of Centennial and Trenden Mason (Oshawa, Ont.) of Durham; Central Division Defensive Player of the Year is Aaron Toniolo (Toronto, Ont.) of Seneca; South Division Defensive Player of the Year is Grant Slater (Hamilton, Ont.) of Mohawk; and co-West Division Defensive Players of the Year are Bradley Heath (Markham, Ont.) of Fanshawe and Patrick Maheux (Amherstburg, Ont.) of St. Clair. In addition to Humber and Sheridan, Fanshawe and St. Lawrence were named Best Defensive Team of their respective divisions.

Several OCAA All-Stars are also celebrated. In addition to Layne, South Division All-Stars include Kalimar Russell (Hamilton, Ont.), Slater and AJ Zangrilli (Mississauga, Ont.) of Mohawk; Mateo Sutic (Mississauga, Ont.) of Redeemer; and Francis Ameyaw (Brampton, Ont.) and Anthony Wright (Brampton, Ont.) of Sheridan.

Along with Gasparotto, Central Division All-Stars include Federico Leal (Ottawa, Ont.), Marcos Nunes (Brampton, Ont.) and Luca Uccello (Markham, Ont.) of Humber; and Anthony Gurrieri (Maple, Ont.), Daylin Martin (Scarborough, Ont.), Nick Spittle (Toronto, Ont.) and Toniolo of Seneca.

Joining Sneddon and Loague as West Division All-Stars are Ian Anderson-Mckenzie (Waterloo, Ont.) and Malachi Ramsay (Cambridge, Ont.) of Conestoga; Heath and Brandon Mendes (London, Ont.) of Fanshawe; and Evan Mendonca (Wallacetown, Ont.) and Jonathan Rondinelli (Windsor, Ont.) of St. Clair.

In addition to Grey, East Division All-Stars include Justin Alvarez (Scarborough, Ont.) and Aristide of Centennial; Garrett Werner (Ajax, Ont.) of Durham; and Tim Balfour (Kingston, Ont.), Ryan Kiers (Kingston, Ont.) and Johnny McDonald (Odessa, Ont.) of St. Lawrence.
