FANSHAWE FALCONS SOAR TO GOLD AT WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

OCAA Championships
Final Standings:

1. Fanshawe
2. Sheridan
3. Mohawk

The Fanshawe Falcons (London) Women’s Soccer Team won the Women’s Soccer title with a 1-0 win over Sheridan College (Oakville) on the weekend in Ottawa, ON as Algonquin College hosted the two-day Championship. Fanshawe’s win hands them their fifth title and adds to their previous record (4) of most OCAA women’s soccer championships.

The Falcons finished the OCAA season as the West Region champions with an 8-1-0 record and now take aim at the provincial crown as Langara College, BC is set to host the CCAA National Soccer Championships from November 9-12.

The west region champion Falcons, opened the championship with a 2-0 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers (Hamilton). In the game, the Falcons put two first half goals up on the scoreboard and never looked back. Shannon McLeod and Carly Hall netted a goal each.

In the gold medal final, Fanshawe edged out the Sheridan Bruins 1-0. The win was decided by a penalty kick by Melissa Elie of Fanshawe in the first half of play. In the second half, the Falcons defense was able to hold off a fierce Sheridan attack to secure the win.

The loss handed the Sheridan Bruins the silver medal, while the Mohawk Moutaineers took bronze with a 2-1 final decision over the Durham Lords (Oshawa). In the bronze medal game Mohawk took the early lead on a goal by Allison Wende. Mohawk held on to a 1-0 lead for most of regulation until Jana Cryderman netted the equalizer with under 2 minutes to go. Two overtime periods solved nothing and the game had to be decided on penalty kicks. After both teams converted two of four penalty kicks, Durham missed their fifth attempt while Brittany Dobbin netted the final penalty kick for Mohawk to win the bronze medal game 2-1.

For their efforts, Fanshawe’s Melissa Elie was named the Tournament MVP while the tournament all-star team consisted of Amanda Celeste of Mohawk, Carly Hall and Ashley Strocki of Fanshawe and April Lettett of Sheridan.

Fanshawe, closed out the regular season with a 5-game unbeaten streak, and outscored the opposition 28-3 over the stretch of the season. The Falcons finish the play-offs and Championship and enter the Nationals with an 11-1-0 and scored ten goals while blanking all their competitors allowing in zero during playoff and championship action.
