NO UPSETS AS TOP FOUR TEAMS ADVANCE TO OCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The OCAA final four championships is set to go as the past week saw the final games of the regular season and all four quarter final matches take place. Sheridan College is set to host the Men’s and Women’s OCAA Soccer Championships from October 27-28.

After quarterfinal action, no upsets occurred and the top two teams from the east and west after the regular season are set to advance to the Championships. The Durham Lords, Algonquin Thunder, Fanshawe Falcons and Humber Hawks will compete this weekend for the Championship title.

Quarterfinal Results:

Game 1:
Saturday, October 21 – Durham defeats Mohawk 6-0
(Durham League Record: 6-0-1)
Game Recap:
The Durham Lords won the East Region title last week and advance to the Championships after a 6-0 victory over the Mohawk Moutaineers on the weekend. Rookie Katie Szeghalmi opened the scoring for Durham at the fifth minute and had two more goals for the hat trick. Veteran Jana Cryderman struck for two goals, and Jen Michalicka added one more. Morgan Kelly was in goal once again for the Lords and played flawlessly when called upon, to earn the shutout. Furthermore, the Durham Lords won the East Region with a 6-0-1 record and ranked third in the country; they went undefeated in Ontario conference play at home since moving to Vaso’s Field at the start of the 2003-04 season and saw Brittany Micucci take the east region scoring title with 13-goals for an average of 1.86 GPG.

Game 2:
Saturday, October 21 – Humber Defeats Fleming P 1-0
(Humber League Record: 6-0-2)
Game Recap:
The Humber Hawks won the West Region title this season finishing with an unbeaten season at 6-0-2. Humber will advance to the Championships after shutting out the Fleming Knights 1-0 in a close quarterfinal match-up on the weekend. Scoring the game winning goal was first year midfielder was Melissa Magliazza of Humber.

The Knights qualified for the playoff game after defeating the La Cite Coyotes 4-0 on Friday night to grab the fourth place spot in the East and more importantly a spot in the playoffs.

Game 3:
Sunday, October 22 – Algonquin Defeats 2-1
(Algonquin League Record: 6-0-1)
Game Recap:
The Algonquin Thunder finished the regular season unbeaten with a 6-0-1 record and won the East Region title. The Thunder earned their berth to the OCAA Championships after defeating the Sheridan Bruins in a close 2-1 game on Sunday. Algonquin goal scorers were Traci Leroux and Sam Blais. Algonquin will take on the Humber Hawks Friday October 27 in the semi-finals at 2:00 pm.

Game 4:
Sunday, October 22 – Fanshawe Defeats Seneca 2-0
(Fanshawe League Record: 6-1-1)
Game Recap:
The Fanshawe Falcons are set to defend their title as they defeated the Seneca Sting 2-0 in their quarterfinal match-up on Sunday. Goal scorers for Fanshawe were first year striker Amanda Ruberto and third year striker Heather Danylchuk. The Falcons are set to compete in the semi-finals on Friday October 21 at 5:00 pm against the Durham Lords.
