BURNABY, B.C. (CCAA) – On the women’s side the Lords
couldn’t capitalize over the defending champions Langara
College out of Vancouver. The Lords opened the tournament with a
convincing 8-0 win over Nova Scotia Agricultural College (Halifax)
but then fell to the host Langara College 3-1 in the second match
of the tournament. The Lords are set to take on FX Garneau in the
Bronze Medal Match Saturday November 11th at 11:00am PST.
The Durham College Women's Soccer team, played well in extreme
weather conditions as torrential rain poured down the majority of
the game and were in the thick of things against the host college
and #1 ranked team in the country. In the end the Lords ranked #4
in Canada fell to the Falcons of Langara College 3-1 at the 2006
ADIDAS/Canadian Colleges Athletic Association CCAA Women's Soccer
National Championships.
Head Coach Vaso Vujanovic was pleased with the team and overall
effort in this big game. Were it not for a very fortunate goal at
the 24th minute mark that re-directed by luck and up into the net
over Morgan Kelly from 25 yards out, the Lords would have played
the Falcons even for the first 20 minutes. The Lords backline led
by freshman standout Megan Durno was superb. Durno the younger
sister of All-Canadian forward Amanda Durno was stellar again for
DC frustrating the forwards for Canada's #1 ranked team.
At the 15th minute mark, Durno fed Kirsten Bodashefsky with a
perfect pass and a great individual effort created a great scoring
chance inside the box. A low blast right side just missed beating a
fooled Langara keeper. Play was equal for the remainder of the
first half and the teams went into the lockeroom at half-time with
the score. Langara 1 Durham 0.
At the 57th minute Langara benefited from another lucky bounce. A
loose ball scramble that the Lords were unable to clear resulted in
a 2-0 Langara lead. At the 60th minute mark after the Lords carried
the play for the most part, Kirsten Bodashefsky scored a
spectacular goal from 25 yards out beating the Langara keeper to
the top left corner of the net. Now trailing by just a goal and the
pressure on we came oh so close on a chance just moments later with
a ball going through the Langara keeper's legs and rolling just
inches right of the goal and out.
While the pressure was on and pushing up the Falcons scored a 3rd
goal to make it 3-1 and seal the victory and a spot in the National
final. The Lords who battled hard and showed the rest of the
country that Langara would not roll to the final, will now advance
to the Bronze medal game on Saturday at 11:00am. It was a valiant
effort for the Lords who will return next year. Next up is a shot
at a national Medal against FX Garneau College from Quebec City. Go
Lords!!
Kirsten Bodashefsky was named player of the game for Durham which
was well deserved. Lords record now improves to 10-0-1
