OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET SET

The OCAA final four championship is set to go as the past week saw the final games of the regular season and all four quarter final matches take place. There were no upsets as Algonquin, Durham, Fanshawe and Humber are making travel plans to head to Algonquin College for the Women’s OCAA Soccer Championship from October 26-27. The match-up’s are the exact same from one year ago at Sheridan as Durham will square off against Fanshawe and Algonquin will be taking on Humber in the semi-final games.

QUALIFYING RESULTS

Durham defeated St. Clair 2-0
The Durham Lords have yet to give up a goal in 2007, after blanking the St. Clair Saints 2-0. In front of the Lord faithful at Vaso’s Field, Lords forward Jennifer Michalicka put one past the keeper giving Durham a 1-0 halftime lead. The Lords added an insurance goal in the 70th minute as OCAA Scoring Champion Katie Szeghalmi netted her first goal of the post-season. Saint’s goalkeeper Stephanie Sullo had a great game in a losing effort, turning away a number of Lord’s scoring opportunities including a Kristen Badashefsky penalty shot. Lord’s keeper Ashley Visser extended her shutout streak, recording her ninth clean sheet of the year. The Lords will open their Championship on Friday morning against the Fanshawe Falcons at 11:00 am. Durham defeated Fanshawe 3-1 in the semi-final last season enroute to their third title in four years.

Fanshawe defeated Seneca 4-0
Fanshawe will make their fourth consecutive trip to the OCAA Women’s Soccer Championship after defeating the Seneca Sting 4-0 over the weekend. Goalkeeper Sarah King lifted the Falcons to their fifth clean sheet of the year. Fanshawe allowed a West Region low three goals this season. Emily Costello of the Falcons recorded a pair of goals in the win, as teammates Amanda Ruberto and Kristina Melhuish score singles in the win. Fanshawe came out of the gate playing an aggressive style of soccer, picking up three cautions in the first half. Fanshawe will hope to return to the gold medal game, after winning the OCAA Championship title in 2005.

Algonquin defeated Mohawk 4-1
The Algonquin Thunder downed the Mohawk Mountaineers 4-1 in Ottawa on Saturday to advance to the OCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. The Thunder, playing on their home artificial turf, will also have the home field advantage for the championship, which they will host this weekend. The Thunder opened up the scoring in the 24th minute, scoring from just outside the 18 yard box. This goal allowed the Thunder to take the momentum scoring three more first half markers, taking a 4-0 lead into the break. Mohawk’s Kira Wilkinson scored Mohawk’s lone goal on a rebound in the second half. Algonquin will take on the West Region champion Humber Hawks in the semi-finals. Algonquin shutout the Hawks 1-0 last season in the OCAA Championship semi-finals, going on to finish in second place.

Humber defeated Fleming 2-0
The Humber Hawks continued their undefeated season after upending the Fleming Knights 2-0 in their qualifying match on Sunday afternoon. With goals coming from Holly Goodard and Jessica Fletcher, the Hawks soared to the shutout victory. Humber will look to get back into the medals after winning bronze last season. The 2007 version of the Hawks featured the West Region’s top offense with 22 goals in the regular season. They will need to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net as they face the host Algonquin Thunder in the semi finals. Algonquin has only surrendered three goals in nine games this season. Kick-off for the highly anticipated semifinal match will be 2:00 pm.
