The finals are set for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association
(OCAA) Women’s Soccer Championship game as the Durham Lords
will meet up with the Humber Hawks on Saturday afternoon with the
provincial title at stake.
Championship action kicked off on Friday with two semi-final
matches taking place. The Durham Lords (Oshawa) advanced to the
women’s gold medal game with a convincing 3-0 victory over
the Fanshawe Falcons. 2007 Player of the Year Katie Szeghalmi
scored two goals for Durham while teammate Brittany Micucci netted
another leading the Lords to the win. The Lords managed to limit
the Falcons scoring opportunities for the full 90 minutes, enroute
to their 10th consecutive shutout of the season. The Lords will
look to win their second consecutive provincial title and their
fifth overall which would be an OCAA all-time record in
women’s soccer.
The Lords will match-up against the Humber Hawks in the gold medal
match on Saturday. Humber defeated the hosting Algonquin Thunder
2-1 in their semi-final match-up. Algonquin and Humber were
scoreless until Holly Goddard broke open the scoring with a
beautiful goal in the 47th minute. Crystal Camillieri added an
insurance marker in the 62nd minute for the Hawks. As the Hawks
went into a defensive lockdown, Sam Blais of Algonquin managed to
cut the Hawk’s lead in half with a goal in the 83rd minute,
putting the Thunder down by one. After several last minute scoring
attempts, time eventually ran out on the Thunder as they were
unable to find the equalizer in the remaining minutes of the game,
sending the Hawks to their first title appearance since 2004.
Humber will be in search for their fourth overall women’s
soccer title and their first since 2001.
The women’s soccer medal round will begin at 9:00 am on
Saturday when the Fanshawe Falcons will square off against the
Algonquin Thunder for the bronze medal. The gold medal match will
kick off at 3:00 pm when the Durham Lords will take on the Humber
Hawks.
The men’s soccer semi-final’s will take place this
evening when the Seneca Sting (North York) and George Brown Huskies
(Toronto) meet up at 5:00 pm. Their match will be followed by the
host Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa) taking on the Fanshawe Falcons
(London) under the lights at 8:00 pm.
