The Durham Lords won their opening match 3-0 against the
Atlantic College Champion Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU)
Mystics on Thursday morning and now sit one win away from clinching
a spot in national title game.
The Lords carried the play throughout the first half and opened the
scoring at the 29 minute mark as 2007 CCAA Player of the Year Katie
Szeghalmi drilled a shot at net that was stopped by the MSVU keeper
but Kirsten Bodashefsky followed it up by burying the rebound to
score the game's opening goal, giving the Lords a 1-0 lead going
into the locker rooms at half.
After the two teams played even for the opening minutes of the
second half, Durham turned on offensive pressure when at the 62
minute mark, Jodi Den Bok scored from the 18 yard box on a low
drive that managed to find the back of the net.
Thirteen minutes later, Katie Szeghalmi headed in a beautiful goal
from 15 yards out, taking an excellent cross from Krista Metcalf.
The goal extends Szeghalmi's scoring streak to seven games where
she has racked up twelve goals.
The Durham Lords are now one win away from securing a spot in the
national title match as they face the FX-Garneau Elans on Friday at
10:30am AST/ 9:30am EST in a rematch of last years bronze medal
game.
Durham will look to flip last year’s results as FX Garneau
defeated Durham 3-1 at the Nationals last season, preventing the
Lords from winning their first women’s soccer national
medal.
Durham also extended their 2007 shutout streak to twelve games as
Ashley Visser picked up another clean sheet. Szeghalmi picked up
some more hardware as she was named the Adidas Player of the
Game.
