Despite a strong effort, the Durham Lords were defeated by the
FX-Garneau Elans 4-2 at the 2007 CCAA Women's Soccer National
Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
It was a very entertaining game with both teams trading scoring
chances for the entire ninety minutes, but it was FX Garneau from
Quebec will adavance to the national title match with the two goal
margin victory.
FX Garneau put an end to Durham's 12-game shutout streak as they
found the back of the net at the two minute mark to take an early
1-0 lead.
Playing from behind for the first time this season, 2006 OCAA
Player of the Year Amanda Durno evened up the score as she buried a
shot at the 17 minute mark of the first half.
Ten minutes later, FX Garneau regained the lead on a low drive to
the left corner, just out of Ashley Visser's reach.
In the second half the two teams traded chances back and forth, but
it was FX Garneau scoring a pair of goals to make it 4-2.
Kristen Bodashefsky scored for Durham at the 76th minute to bring
the Lords back to within 2 goals. Durham is putting the pressure on
in the last 15 minutes, trying to even with the Elans. For her
efforts, Bodashefsky was named player of the game.
Durham will face the loser of the Mount Royal/Capilano match,
scheduled to take place later today. This will mark Durham's second
straight appearence in the bronze medal game at the women's soccer
nationals.
