HUMBER WOMEN’S SOCCER BRONZED

The Humber Hawks are the Belairdirect OCAA women’s soccer championship bronze medalist. It might not have been the medal colour of their choice for the defending OCAA Champions, but more importantly, after a their first blemish of the season they appear to back on track and moving forward for the CCAA Nationals Championship of which they are hosting.

Humber came out with a clear focus in an attempt of redeeming themselves and reverse their outcome from the day prior. Humber opened the scoring early when Jacqueline Rolfe scored in the 17th minute for the Hawks. It only took two more minutes before the second goal of the game was scored, when Brittany Szcerbakow found the back of the net, giving the Hawks a 2-nil lead. The first half scoring continued for Humber with Leslie Quigley netting the third goal of the game and it concluded with the fourth goal by Lucia Sinisi.

“I think the girls played extremely well today,” said Hawks Head Coach Vince Pileggi. “It was tough getting up for a nine o’clock game, but once the game started, our girls were relaxed and confident and we were able to move the ball around and were able to capitalize early in the game.”

Disappointed with not being able to cap off a perfect season, Pileggi still thinks his team is capable of carrying the bronze medal performance into the CCAA National Championship.

“We were definitely one of the top teams in the province this year and we knew we were one of the teams to beat coming in and I still think we are. I thought we played well yesterday, we moved the ball around well, we just weren’t able to capitalize. Durham didn’t give us many opportunities to do that, but our girls rebounded very well today and we were able to get a medal here in Ontario and hopefully we’ll be able to carry that momentum into nationals in a couple of weeks, which will be a very, very tough tournament as well.”

Humber will advance to the CCAA Big Kahuna/adidas Women’s National Soccer Championship from November 4-7 as the host seed. The winner between the Durham Lords and the Fanshawe Falcons will also advance and represent the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association at the season ending event.
