It has been five years since the Canadian Colleges Athletic
Association (CCAA) National Championship has been hosted by
Ontario, but now, Humber College is ready to welcome Canada’s
top women’s collegiate soccer teams to the 2009 Big
Kahuna/adidas CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship. The
event will take place from November 3-7, 2009 at the Ontario Soccer
Centre in Vaughan.
This five day event beings Tuesday, November 3rd with the top
women’s soccer players and their coaches are recognized at
the CCAA All Canadian Awards Banquet. The festivities will continue
until Saturday, November 7, when it wraps up with the medal games.
Humber will play their first game on Wednesday, November 4th, when
they take on Kwantlen Polytechnic University from British
Columbia.
After finishing third at this year’s OCAA Provincial
Championship and thoughts of last years bronze medal finish at the
national’s in Kamloops, the Hawks will be looking to put
their best foot forward when they take to the pitch versus
Canada’s top college teams.
Humber was not disappointed at this year’s OCAA Championship
Banquet however. The ladies were well decorated as Keyla Moreno was
named the OCAA Player of the Year after finishing second in overall
league scoring with 13 goals in 10 games and was also instrumental
in leading her team to a perfect 12-0-0 season. Moreno was also
named a CCAA All-Canadian as well as the Central West Region
Scoring Champion (1.30 PPG) and a League All-star.
Humber captain and defender Joanna Alexopulos, also earned an All
Canadian nomination, for her impeccable leadership skill and her
team oriented mentality. This is Joanna’s second national
championship appearance.
Durham’s Katie Watts, will also receive an All-Canadian award
for her impressive league leading 1.64 GPG average. This marks the
second year in row where Katie has led the OCAA in overall scoring.
The second year forward from Oshawa, moved herself into the record
books again this season, this time sitting second on the all-time
career scoring list. With another season like this past, Watts is
on pace to become the OCAA’s all-time leading scorer.
Coming off a thrilling gold medal win at the OCAA Provincial
Championships, the Fanshawe Falcons will look to win their first
national championship when they take on Mount Saint Vincent
University on Wednesday, November 4th at 11:00am. The Fanshawe
ladies also came away with some golden recognition’s from
Ontario as they were named the West Division’s Best Defensive
and Offensive Team, with 36 goals for and 12 goals against.
Behind every great team is a great coach. Fleming
Peterborough’s John (Tony) Bombino earned his first
nomination as the OCAA Coach of the Year and is in contention for
CCAA Coach of the Year honours. This is Bombino’s first year
as the team’s head coach at Fleming and has managed to help
his team climb not only the provincial, but national ranks.
John’s dedication to his athlete’s success in the
classroom as well as in the community, ensures his team graduates
on-time and with the skills necessary to move forward in life.
Fleming Peterborough finished first in the East Division this year
with a record of 9-1-2, bettering lasts year record of 7-4-0.
